Eigel, Jones Discuss issues of the day on “Wake Up Springfield”

Senator Bill Eigel joined Tim Jones to talk mask mandates, education reform, Critical Race Theory and other top issues confronting conservatives in Missouri.  Listen to their 15min interview here:

Sinquefield Continues Contributions

Last week we reported that St. Louis Businessman Rex Sinquefield has reemerged as a major republican campaign contributor this cycle after taking a break amid some internal reorganization the last few years.  He parted ways with his previous lobbyist and his family was taking a larger role in the decision-making—during this time the donations mostly stopped, as the policies being advocated for mostly turned to criminal justice reform.

Last week Sinquefield donated to a PAC supporting Treasurer Scott Fitzpatirck in his campaign for State Auditor with a contribution totaling $250,000.  Over the weekend, he reported another $250,000 contribution to Lt. Governor Mike Kehoe.  Unlike Fitzpatrick, Kehoe is not running for office currently but is expected to run for Governor in 2024.  Whether or not this is Sinquefield laying down a marker in the 2024 Governor’s primary, or simply supporting Kehoe’s current efforts, is yet to be seen.

Coleman Garners Post Dispatch Angst over Pro-Life Legislation

Rep. Mary Elizabeth Coleman earned her conservative stripes over the weekend when the St. Louis Post Dispatch Editorial Board attempted to take her to task over her most recent pre-filed Pro-Life legislation.

“The Missouri bill by Rep. Mary Elizabeth Coleman, R-Arnold, uses the same standard as the Texas bill, declaring abortion illegal as soon as a heartbeat is detectable in an embryo. That effectively outlaws abortion after about six weeks of pregnancy, a point at which many women don’t even know that they are pregnant.

The heartbeat standard directly challenges Roe v. Wade, which set a viability standard — that is, the point at which a fetus would be able to live outside the womb. That’s generally at about 24 weeks or more into a pregnancy. The viability standard was an attempt to balance the rights of the woman with the difficult question of when a fetus becomes a person.”

Jefferson County Clerk Considering Senate Bid

Ken Waller, the current Jefferson County Clerk, was seeking a run for State Representative.  Over the weekend, however, he confirmed he is now exploring a senate run with the departure of State Representative Becky Ruth from the race.  Waller said he has a great relationship with labor unions and would embrace their support.  He would be joining Reps. Mary Elizabeth Coleman and Dan Shaul in the primary.  Waller would be assumed to be filling the moderate void being left by Ruth’s appointment.

Former Legislator Launches Legal Challenge to Lobbying Ban

Former Rep. Rocky Miller has mounted a legal challenge to Missouri statute which bars legislators from lobbying for at least two years following their service in the General Assembly.

Miller said the statute, which was added to the Missouri Constitution in 2018, violates his free speech rights. He represented HD 124 in Camden and Miller counties from 2013-2021.

“Earlier this year, I was approached by a business which needed help navigating some environmental regulation issues with the state. Unfortunately, I was unable to help them because of a recent law that bans me from advocating for them to the government,” Miller told The Missouri Times. “Some call this lobbying, but the constitution calls it freedom of speech and petitioning your government.”

Bob Jones Joins Senate Primary to Replace Term-limited Dave Schatz

The race for state senate to replace term-limited Dave Schatz is heating up once again since the departure of Rep. Aaron Griesheimer.  Franklin County businessman Robert (Bob) C. Jones has announced for the State Senate seat against conservative Businessman Ben Brown and Rep. Nate Tate.  Jones is a former social studies teacher who is expected to have the support of the teachers’ unions and education establishment organizations in the state.

Supreme Court Arguments Suggest Bright Future for Parental School Choice

School freedom should be for all families regardless of whether they choose a secular or religious school.

Supporters of school freedom can take comfort in the fact that Supreme Court justices are pushing back on state efforts to exclude families who want to use school choice to send their children to religious schools. School freedom should be for all families regardless of whether they plan to send their children to a secular or religious school. The case currently before the court, Carson v. Makin, pits Maine parents who want to use the state's voucher program to send their children to religious schools against a 1980 decision by Maine's attorney general denying families that option. Poll shows growing Democrat support for school choice as debate over mask mandates continue Video The state's counsel faced a grilling from the justices, with Justice Brett Kavanaugh saying, "I don't see how you're suggesting that the subsidy changes the analysis. That's just discrimination on the basis of religion right there at that neighborhood level." The court's skepticism continues a pattern of recent decisions where it has blocked states from excluding families who want to use vouchers or other school choice programs to send their children to a religious school. Chief Justice John Roberts aptly summarized the court's philosophy in his majority opinion for Espinoza v. Montana, "A state need not subsidize private education. But once a state decides to do so, it cannot disqualify some private schools solely because they are religious." That is what Maine is trying to do, and the court must stand firm and rule for school freedom.

Troops Find Religious Exemption for Vaccines Unattainable

More than 12,000 military service members refusing the COVID-19 vaccine are seeking religious exemptions, and so far they are having zero success. That total lack of approvals is creating new tensions within the military, even as the vast majority of the armed forces have gotten vaccinated. The services, urgently trying to keep the coronavirus pandemic in check by getting troops vaccinated, are now besieged with exemption requests they are unlikely to approve. Meanwhile, troops claiming religious reasons for avoiding the shots are perplexed because exemptions are theoretically available, yet seem impossible to obtain. Caught in the middle are chaplains, who must balance the desire to offer compassionate care and guidance to personnel with the need to explain a complicated process that may well be futile. They also must assess requests from those who may be using religion as an excuse to avoid a vaccine that, while credited with preventing needless deaths, has become politically charged. “So many of them come in thinking that I make the decision, and if they make this case, that it’s a done deal,” said Maj. A’Shellarien Lang, an Army chaplain for the National Guard. “I don’t make the decision. And so when they find that out, it’s a kind of game-changer in the sense that they know that the process has to continue.”
