Missouri Firearms Coalition Dismantles Greitens Opposition to SAPA

Aaron Dorr of the Missouri Firearms Coalition calles Greitens’ claims against SAPA “unforgiveable”, takes Greitens’ comments one by one on SAPA and offers critiques and corrections.

“The truth is Jered Taylor in the House and Eric Burlison in the Senate have done more to expand 2A freedom in Missouri than anybody perhaps in the history of Missouri politics, and every gun owner in the state knows that to be true,” Dorr said, calling on Greitens to apologize to gun owners as well as the Conservative Caucus lawmakers who fought for SAPA. “You lied about them. Shame on you, Eric.”

Omicron Shows why it’s Time to Move on from Restrictions

Now that the Omicron variant has been confirmed to have made landfall in the United States, there’s been an all too familiar public debate over whether it should lead to a new wave of restrictions. Already, the Washington Post reported that the Biden administration is considering more draconian rules for Americans returning from abroad, including additional testing and quarantine requirements — neither of which is enforceable. President Biden himself has claimed that more lockdowns were off the table “for now” — which means that they are not, in fact, off the table. Meanwhile, New York governor Kathy Hochul is not even waiting; she already declared a state of emergency and said that the state may limit non-urgent hospital procedures if necessary. While there are some early signs that Omicron results in mild illness, there is currently not much to go on. Anthony Fauci has assured us that within two weeks, we’ll have a lot more information — specifically, on how transmissible it is, how fatal it is, and whether the current vaccines offer protection from the new variant. Of course, it would be preferable if the variant turned out to be mild and blunted by our current vaccines. But this whole discussion rests on a fundamentally flawed premise: the idea that we need to be waiting with bated breath for the results of current Omicron studies to determine whether we can go on with our lives. In reality, the Omicron variant demonstrates that COVID-19 is not going to disappear anytime soon. We should recalibrate based on that assumption.

Stacey Abrams Announces Run for Georgia Governor in 2022

Stacey Abrams announced Wednesday that she is launching her second bid for governor of Georgia. Abrams, a Democrat, narrowly lost to Gov. Brian Kemp in 2018 and refused to concede, though she acknowledged her GOP rival would be certified the victor, because she said minority votes that would have favored her were suppressed. If she wins in 2022, she would become the first black female governor elected in the United States. "I'm running for Governor because opportunity in our state shouldn't be determined by zip code, background or access to power," Abrams said in a tweet announcing her campaign. Georgia has become a battleground state, with several close elections in recent years narrowly favoring Democrats. Abrams, minority leader of the Georgia House of Representatives from 2011 to 2017, has spent the last three years advocating for voting reform in Georgia after she said Kemp purged voters from the registration lists while he was secretary of state. The Republican Governors Association criticized Abrams's liberal policies and vowed to support Kemp in his reelection bid. "Abrams stands firmly on the side of the woke activists who cost Georgia millions in revenue all because Governor Brian Kemp made it a priority to protect lives and livelihoods, keep kids in school and in the classroom, let businesses stay open and grow their workforce, and make it easier to vote and harder to cheat," the RGA said in a statement.

Supreme Court Signals Willingness to uphold Abortion Limits in Mississippi Case

The Supreme Court appeared prepared Wednesday to uphold a Mississippi law that would ban almost all abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, which would be a dramatic break from 50 years of rulings. The justices heard 90 minutes of oral arguments in the most direct challenge to Roe v. Wade in nearly three decades. A majority of the court's conservative justices suggested they were prepared to discard the court's previous standard that prevented states from banning abortion before a fetus becomes viable, which is generally considered to be at about 24 weeks into a pregnancy. It was unclear after Wednesday's argument whether the court would take the additional step of explicitly overturning its abortion precedents, including Roe v. Wade. The three more liberal justices warned that the court would appear to be a political body if it tossed out abortion rulings that the country has relied on for decades. "It is particularly important to show that what we do in overturning a case is grounded in principle and not social pressure," Justice Stephen Breyer warned.
