Missouri Senate Straw Poll Shows Narrow Lead for Greitens

Straw poll results from the Defense of Liberty Dinner 2021.

Straw poll results from the Defense of Liberty Dinner 2021.

The 2021 Defense Of Liberty Straw Poll drew 2,188 responses. This was a rank choice poll meaning voters were not asked to vote for only their candidate of choice, but they were instead asked to rank the candidates in order of preference. The value to a rank choice poll is that it provides insight into how people would vote if candidates were systematically eliminated until the two remaining candidates faced each other in a run-off election. This is a straw poll – these numbers only indicate the pulse of the people participating at the time and anyone could have participated since the poll was made public.

Paul Curtman and former Speaker of the House Tim Jones analyze the results here.

Judge Mandates Obamacare Expansion in Missouri

This week Cole County Judge Jon Beetem said the Missouri Department of Social Services cannot deny individuals who qualify for Medicaid under the recent expansion ballot initiative from enrolling in the MO HealthNet program.  Conservative legislators have decried the decision and are calling for a special session from Governor Parson. The ruling made clear that the legislature has the ability to defund the expansion, but because there was not a specific budget line item indicating they would be providing no more for expansion they would have to expand to those who qualify.  Common belief is that there is enough money already appropriated to cover the expansion until January, but many conservative legislators are hoping to address the issue before then.  If no special session is called, expect this issue to be address early in the budget process next January.

Republican Legislators Set Target on SAPA

Three Republican legislators have announced their intentions to role back key provisions of the Second Amendment Preservation Act in the upcoming legislative session. Senator Jason Bean, Rep. Hardy Billington, and Rep. Darrell Atchison have all announced their intentions to undue a key provision of the act which prevents Missouri tax-payer funded law enforcement officials from assisting the federal government in gun seizures of Missouri citizens.  You can expect strong pushback on the issue from several more conservative members of the legislature who viewed the provision as essential during the last legislative session.
