Despite Conservative Opposition, House Panel backs 6-2 Map

Despite opposition from numerous conservative leaders, activists, and organizations throughout the state—the House redistricting committee has moved forward with a 6-2 map making only slight adjustments to accommodate Ray County officials who hoped to keep their county and cities under one congressional district.

Conservative Caucus Seeks to Reform Bill Referral Process

Members of the senate conservative caucus aired grievances with the bill referral process that often has been leveraged to keep certain pieces of legislation from moving forward in committee.  Senator Onder pointed to the specific example of his healthcare bill related to the prohibition of abortion funding through MO Healthnet that was referred to the Seniors, Families, and Veterans committee as opposed to the Committee on Health.

Eigel Proposes Allowing Senators to Refer Their Own Bills to Committees

Sen. Bill Eigel filed a resolution Tuesday that would allow senators to be able to have two of their bills each regular session referred to a standing committee of his or her choice.

SR 448, which amends Rule 50, came after multiple conservative senators complained about which committees certain bills had been assigned to already this year. Bills are referred to committees by the Senate president pro tem.  Eigel said he capped the limit at two so as not to ensue “total chaos.” He said the measure would give senators “a little bit of control over where their high-priority bills would go.”

“A reasonable way to empower the senators is to allow them to have a voice in the movement in some of their biggest pieces of legislation,” Eigel said on the floor.

Senate Moves Forward with Change to PQ Rules

For the first time in decades, the Missouri Senate approved changes to how the previous question (PQ) can be used.  The rule change was offered by Senate Minority Leader John Rizzo. Now, 10 senators are needed to move a PQ motion — up from just five. A PQ is used to end a filibuster so many feel like this will empower democrats to block conservative legislation from moving forward by making it harder to end the filibuster.

ICYMI: St. Louis County Residents Weigh in on New Mask Mandate after 1st Week

The owner and a patron of Satchmo's Bar and Grill believe the decision to wear a mask should be left up to the individual not politicians

"We are going to remain mask optional," Satchmo's owner and District 26 State Senate Candidate Ben Brown said. Brown said the mandate is unlawful for two reasons.

"You can only enact one similar mandate within a 180-day period. Second, the other argument is that since our state is no longer under a state of emergency, it would actually take a 2/3 majority vote to pass this order instead of a simple majority," Brown said. Brown and Joe S. believe masking choices should be left up to individuals and not politicians.

"I don't oppose masks whatsoever. If somebody believes that that's the best personal health decision for themselves and their family, they should be permitted to wear a mask anywhere they'd like," Brown said.

Fauci Unhinged? Fauci Rages Against Republican Sens. Paul, ‘Moron’ Marshall at Senate Hearing

Dr. Anthony Fauci repeatedly lashed out at Republican senators during a bad-tempered Senate hearing Tuesday, accusing Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky of fueling threats against the White House chief medical adviser and his family before referring to Sen. Roger Marshall of Kansas as a “moron” on a hot mic. Fauci and Paul have repeatedly clashed during Senate hearings in recent months and engaged in yet another verbal throwdown before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. At one point, Fauci accused Paul of claiming he was “responsible for the death of 4 to 5 million people, which is really irresponsible.” A couple of hours later, Marshall — himself a medical doctor — told Fauci, “You have an annual salary in 2020 that was $434,000. You oversee over $5 billion in federal research grants. As the highest paid employee in the entire federal government, yes or no: would you be willing to submit to Congress and the public a financial disclosure that includes your past and current investments?” “All you have to do is ask for it,” Fauci fumed. “You’re so misinformed, it’s extraordinary.”
