Missouri Abortion Law Debate Focuses on Down Syndrome Provision

Attorneys for the state focused on a provision preventing abortions based on a prenatal Down syndrome diagnosis as the battle over Missouri’s abortion law continued in federal court Tuesday.

Attorney General Eric Schmitt’s office argued the case before the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals Tuesday morning, focusing the debate on provisions in the bill restricting abortions based solely on the diagnosis of Down syndrome. Schmitt said the angle was a “relatively new issue before the court” and argued the restriction emphasized “all life is sacred.”

“We have to ask ourselves who we want to be,” Schmitt told reporters following the hearing. “Do we want to be a nation that pressures women and families into believing the life of an individual with Down syndrome is not worth celebrating? Or do we believe that this diagnosis should not be an automatic death sentence and that we shouldn’t target an entire group of people simply because they have a certain trait?”

Axios recently covered the shifting public opinion and provides a good break down on where states currently stand from a policy viewpoint Here.

Taliban Ask to Address UN General Assembly

The Taliban have challenged the credentials of Afghanistan’s former United Nations ambassador and are asking to speak at the UN general assembly, a UN spokesperson has said. UN officials must now decide which representative to recognise, a month after the Taliban swept into power as the US prepared to withdraw from Afghanistan at the end of August. UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said secretary general Antonio Guterres received a communication on 15 September from the accredited Afghan ambassador, Ghulam Isaczai, with the list of Afghanistan’s delegation for the assembly’s 76th annual session. The Taliban said it was nominating a new UN permanent representative, Mohammad Suhail Shaheen, Dujarric said. In cases of disputes over seats at the UN, the general assembly’s nine-member credentials committee must meet to make a decision. Both letters have been sent to the committee, Dujarric said. Afghanistan is scheduled to give the last speech on the final day of the high-level meeting on 27 September, but it is unclear whether the committee will meet before the end of the convocation on Monday.
