MUST READ: The New Face of the Antiabortion Movement is a Young Mom of 6 Who Listens to Lizzo

State Rep. Mary Elizabeth Coleman just filed a Texas-style abortion ban in Missouri

ST. LOUIS — When state Rep. Mary Elizabeth Coleman stepped up to the microphone, her male colleagues stopped talking. Inside a crisis pregnancy center, Missouri’s secretary of state, three state representatives, a state senator and several support staff — all White men — settled into their folding chairs to listen to the woman one called the “female face of the pro-life movement.”

“I’m a mother of six,” Coleman, 39, said as she addressed the 20 people in the crowd. “My first son was born between my first and second years of law school. My second son was nursed as I was handed my law school degree.”

She’d brought everyone together on this afternoon in mid-December to announce her new antiabortion bill, an eight-week ban mimicking the law that has successfully eradicated almost all abortions in Texas since Sept. 1. Coleman chose to debut her legislation here, in a room with rhinestone-studded walls and a “believe in your selfie” station, because the pregnancy center’s guiding ethos aligns with her own: Faced with an unexpected pregnancy, Coleman says, women “will rise to the occasion.”

Congressional Redistricting Update

Sen. Mike Bernskoetter and Rep. Dan Shaul will file the same map in the legislature. that is a “6-2” map rather than a “7-1”.  Meaning, two safe democrat seats are being proposed.  Many expect conservative members of the legislature to push back on behalf of the 7-1 map that would give republicans an additional congressional seat in the state.

Parson Appointments

As we previously predicted, Judge Darrell E. Missey of Jefferson County has been selected to lead the Children’s Division as its new director. State Representative and former State Senator Wayne Wallingford will join the governor’s Cabinet as the Director of the Department of Revenue in January. Acting Director Valerie Huhn will officially take the reins of the Department of Mental Health (DMH) on January 1st.

Huhn was chosen to permanently lead DMH by the Missouri Mental Health Commission after a nationwide search, according to commission Chair Teresa Coyan.

ICYMI: Legislature Heading Back to Session, SOTS Soon to Follow

The 2022 legislative session begins on Jan. 5th. Governor Parson will officially outline his budgetary priorities two weeks later during his annual State of the State address. The speech is set for 3 p.m. on Jan. 19, exactly two weeks after the legislative session gets underway.  However, ultimately it is up to the legislature to decide which, if any, of the priorities they will fund.

Will Biden and Harris Lead Dems to Torch the Filibuster?

Democrats will need to curtail the Senate filibuster if they aim to pass voting legislation and other priorities next, and the party's top leaders are encouraging them to do just that. But the effort is far from guaranteed to prevail, with President Joe Biden's role still in doubt, and if it succeeds, may come back to bite the party just a year or two down the road. "If the only thing standing between getting voting rights legislation passed and not getting passed is the filibuster, I support making the exception of voting rights for the filibuster," Biden recently told ABC News, adding that he doesn’t think the Senate will “have to go that far.” Vice President Kamala Harris added in a weekend interview with CBS that the United States risks losing its status as a role model for democracy without new federal elections laws. "Right now, we're about to take ourselves off the map as a role model if we let people destroy one of the most important pillars of a democracy, which is free and fair elections," she said. The party has introduced two bills, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the For the People Act, which Democrats say are needed to expand voting rights, rein in gerrymandering, and create new ethics roles for federal officeholders.

Missouri Republicans Unveil New Congressional Map

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Redistricting leaders from both chambers of the Missouri Legislature released their proposed changes to congressional maps Thursday afternoon, setting the stage for a battle in the statehouse next session.

Missouri’s map would likely remain 6-2 favoring Republicans — instead of a rumored 7-1 —if the draft were approved.
