Congressional Redistricting Causing Divide Amongst Conservatives and Moderates
As we previously reported, Sen. Mike Bernskoetter and Rep. Dan Shaul will file the same map in the legislature. that is a “6-2” map rather than a “7-1”. Meaning, two safe democrat seats are being proposed. However, since that announcement lines amongst conservatives and moderates in the legislature are starting to be drawn. Many fear a 6-2 map could actually be a 5-3 map in the near future giving democrats an extra congressional seat as suburban areas turn more blue. Some conservative Senators took to twitter to announce their opposition to the democrat-favored map.
Senator Denny Hoskins, CPA

While MO Republican legislative leaders proposed a map that could potentially take away a R congressional seat and add a D seat, next door in Illinois, the Democrat legislative leaders just approved a map to dissolve 2 Republican congressional seats. #moleg
Senator Bill Eigel
@BillEigel
This map will lead to a likely 5-3 split in MO federal delegation by mid-decade. I don’t believe that is the best representation of MO values when we have a supermajority of Republicans elected to Jefferson City. Lots of work to do here. #moleg
Senator Bob Onder
@BobOnderMO
Far from “gerrymandering,” MO GOP, which could have drawn a 7-1 map, appears to have drawn a 5-2-1 map. #moleg @MissouriGOP @SenateCaucus @Missouri_HRCC @MOSenateCC
Missouri GOP Leaders Try to Surrender on Redistricting — and Receive the Backlash They Deserve
Imagine that you are a GOP legislative leader in a state that Donald Trump won by 15 points in 2020. Then imagine that as a GOP leader in that state, you also enjoy a nearly three-to-one advantage in both chambers of the legislature and have a conservative governor. Further, imagine that as this GOP leader in this deep red state, you are faced with blue states heavily gerrymandering in an attempt to retain the House of Representatives in 2022.
What would you do when it comes to redistricting if you were in that position? You’d fight fire with fire because the stakes are just too high, right? Unfortunately, that willingness to do what it takes to win isn’t prevalent among Missouri’s Republican legislative leadership. Instead, they’ve introduced a map that could actually eliminate a Republican seat and add a Democrat one.

Missouri House and Senate Redistricting Maps Remain Unsettled
On the final day to make a decision, House and Senate redistricting commissions faced a choice: Approve two maps — one Democratic and one Republican — or hand responsibility for drawing state legislative lines to a panel of appellate judges.
The House commission chose the first option while the Senate went with the second.
Because the Senate commission ended up deadlocking, lawmakers may have to more seriously consider moving the state’s candidate filing back. And even though the House commission move buys more time, there’s no guarantee that judges won’t end up drawing the map. On the Senate side, judges will now draw the lines.
The constitutional deadline for the House and Senate commissions to come up with a tentative map was Dec. 23. The panels, which are split evenly between Republicans and Democrats, had significant differences to iron out — particularly in suburban parts of the state which tend to be more competitive.
The House commission unanimously decided to send one Republican plan and one Democratic plan to Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft’s office. Commissioner James Thomas III noted that roughly 112 out of 163 districts were identical on the maps. Commissioners have until late January to vote on a final map. If they don’t come to an agreement, the Missouri Supreme Court appoints six appellate judges to finish the job.
