Missouri Lawmakers Return to Jeff City for their Annual Legislative Session Today, Wednesday January 5th

[Listen In]: Tim Jones and Senator Bill Eigel discuss the current political climate of Missouri as we look forward to Missouri’s new legislative session. Here are some of the topics they hope lawmakers will consider this Session: Protection of Rights, Education Reform, Cutting Taxes.

GOP Lawmakers Renew Effort to Bar Planned Parenthood from Missouri Medicaid program

Featuring Candidate Spotlight, Rep. Mary Elizabeth Coleman

After the issue ground legislative work to a halt last year, Missouri Republican lawmakers plan to renew their efforts to bar Planned Parenthood from receiving taxpayer dollars when they return to the state Capitol this week. More than half a dozen bills have been filed so far that aim to strip abortion providers or their affiliates of participation in the state’s Medicaid program or from receiving public benefits more broadly.

Since the mid-90s, lawmakers have attempted to restrict public funds from going to Planned Parenthood, but legislative efforts last year gained new ground when an essential tax on hospitals, nursing homes and pharmacies, known as the federal reimbursement allowance (FRA), was used as leverage. That effort fizzled during a special session over the summer. But heading into the 2022 legislative session, lawmakers and anti-abortion advocates say it is time for action.

“When Republicans took over supermajorities in the early 2000s, that was a big promise that was made to the voters that we would stop taxpayers’ dollars from funding abortions,” said state Rep. Mary Elizabeth Coleman, R-Arnold, later adding: “Our inability to get that done with the FRA is very frustrating to me.”

Justin Hill resigning from General Assembly

Rep. Justin Hill is resigning from the statehouse this week to move to Florida to try and build a consulting business. Hill faced a competitive GOP primary for state Senate to replace Sen. Bob Onder who is term-limited against Reps. Nick Schroer and John Wiemann.  With Hill out, Schroer is expected to see a bump of support as he now is the only candidate in the race occupying the conservative lane.

Ashcroft Defends Sweeping Texas Voting Law, Considers it a Model for Missouri

Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft defended a sweeping Texas election law in court recently, arguing it could be a model for Missouri as session gets underway.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed into law last year legislation that tightened his state’s voting regulations, including banning most drive-thru voting, prohibiting local election officials from distributing unsolicited mail-in ballot applications, and strengthening mail-in voting rules. Critics, including the state’s Democratic lawmakers, have said the new law is voter suppression.

Harry Roberts, of Saint Joseph, Appointed as the Missouri Military Advocate

Harry Roberts recently served as the Deputy Chief of Staff to Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft. Prior to this, Roberts formerly served Buchanan County as Presiding Commissioner and President of the Buchanan County EMS Board. He ran unsuccessfully in the GOP primary against current moderate Senator Tony Luetkemeyer.

Listen In As Tim Jones and Senator Bill Eigel Discuss What Happened with the Drawings of Missouri’s Congressional Redistricting Map

Wake Up Springfield w. Tim Jones 93.3 KWTO

In Missouri where Republicans control all statewide offices and have a supermajority in the House and Senate, Democrats still succeed in gaining more seats after Redistricting.  How does this happen? Senator Bill Eigel and Tim Jones assess the implications of the liberal Republicans of Missouri, led by Senate Majority Leader Caleb Rowden and discuss the importance of having as many Republican congressional seats in D.C. to check what Biden’s doing.

Senator Eigel along with others is ready to fight back. On air he makes a commitment to bring a map that is a 7-1+R map to the floor “to find out amongst the 24 Republican Senators which ones actually believe that sending as may Republicans as possible is the right way to go our which ones believe that we ought to be sending more Democrats to Washington, D.C.”

ICYMI: Missouri GOP Leaders Try to Surrender on Redistricting — and Receive the Backlash They Deserve

Imagine that you are a GOP legislative leader in a state that Donald Trump won by 15 points in 2020. Then imagine that as a GOP leader in that state, you also enjoy a nearly three-to-one advantage in both chambers of the legislature and have a conservative governor. Further, imagine that as this GOP leader in this deep red state, you are faced with blue states heavily gerrymandering in an attempt to retain the House of Representatives in 2022.

What would you do when it comes to redistricting if you were in that position? You’d fight fire with fire because the stakes are just too high, right? Unfortunately, that willingness to do what it takes to win isn’t prevalent among Missouri’s Republican legislative leadership. Instead, they’ve introduced a map that could actually eliminate a Republican seat and add a Democrat one.
